My concert pianist mother taught me from a very young age what it means to navigate those 88 keys on the piano.

As a piano teacher…
I’ve spent much of my career working in music schools and offering private lessons. Throughout that time, I guided students through the traditional paths of classical and jazz, but something always felt missing—my true passion and teaching style was elsewhere.
When I first discovered boogie woogie and blues, I was hooked. But to my frustration, I couldn’t find a mentor to help me master this style. The majority of teachers were focused on classical or jazz, leaving me to figure it out on my own.
It wasn’t easy—there were countless moments of trial and error, but in the end, that journey taught me something invaluable: the freedom and joy that comes from playing a style that lights you up.
After years of working within the boundaries of traditional teaching methods, I made the decision to step away and do what I truly love—help others experience the thrill of mastering boogie woogie. I’ve taken everything I’ve learned from my teaching career and applied it to create a program that breaks away from the rigid, one-size-fits-all methods. Overcoming 7 common piano learning misconceptions with Boogie Woogie Mastery
Misconception #1: “Boogie Woogie is too hard to learn unless you’ve been playing piano for years.”
Truth: The truth is, anyone can learn Boogie Woogie with the right method. The reason many people find it challenging is that traditional piano teaching often skips over the fundamentals of rhythm and improvisation that are crucial to this style, and expect you to learn 10 years of classical piano first! Not nececcarry!
My Experience: In my 8 years of teaching, I’ve seen complete beginners pick up Boogie Woogie quickly by focusing on rhythm and repetition, having clarity on the 8 boogie woogie shapes (the system of improv), the 12-Bar-Blues Structure, and getting continued Feedback by me. My approach simplifies the learning process so anyone can jump in and start playing confidently.
Misconception #2: “You need perfect hand-independence to play Boogie Woogie.”
Truth: While Boogie Woogie does require hand independence, it’s a skill that can be developed step by step. Many people struggle with it because they try to master everything at once. I sucked at hand independence in the beginning too.
My Experience: In my teaching method, I break down hand independence into manageable exercises, so you can gradually build confidence. After working with hundreds of students, I’ve refined an approach that makes this one of the easiest hurdles to overcome.
Misconception #3: “I’m too old to start learning Boogie Woogie.”
Truth: Age is not a barrier to learning music. In fact, Boogie Woogie is one of the most accessible and joyful styles to play, regardless of when you start due to the simple structure of it.
My Experience: Many of my students are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and they’re playing at impressive levels. My oldest student is 88 years old (!).
My teaching approach is tailored for adults, with a focus on making learning fun, clear, and rewarding from day one.
Misconception #4: “You need hours of practice every day to improve.”
Truth: Consistency is more important than long practice sessions. Focused, effective practice even for just 10-15 minutes a day can yield great results.
My Experience: I’ve seen incredible progress with students who have busy schedules. My program is designed to make short, focused practice highly effective, and taking all the load off you myself by giving you individual attention with step-by-step practice programs every week (and a lot more), allowing steady improvement without burning out.
Misconception #7: "I’ll never be able to play with both hands."
Truth: Hand coordination can be built over time with the right exercises. It's a challenge, but not an impossible one, as long as you have clarity on what to do to resolve it and are getting constant feedback. Then it’s as simple as making coffee.
My Experience: All of my students struggle with this at first. It’s one of the 3 Main Factors, after all. But with step-by-step guidance, they all overcome this challenge on their own time. (usually within the first month)
Misconception #6: “You need to read sheet music to play Boogie Woogie.”
Truth: It’s quite the opposite - Boogie Woogie is actually one of the most improvisational and ear-based styles of music. You don’t need to be tied to sheet music—once you understand a few basic patterns, you’ll be able to play freely and improvise.
My Experience: Most of my students come to me feeling stuck because they’re used to playing only what’s on the page or in the YouTube video. My teaching focuses on freeing you from that limitation, teaching you how to understand, hear, and feel the music, so you can improvise naturally.
Misconception #5: “Boogie Woogie is only for those with natural musical talent.”
Truth: Talent only goes so far. I certainly wasn’t talented, and you’ve seen where I have gotten to. Boogie Woogie is a skill that can be learned with practice, just like any other musical style.
My Experience: Many students who thought they lacked ‘talent’ became great players. I focus on training methods that demystify Boogie Woogie, showing that practice and guidance matter far more than innate talent.

But the problem runs deeper. With each passing day, boogie woogie risks fading from memory, especially among the youth who have yet to experience its magic.
The objective is clear: how do we revive this timeless genre, spread the magic, and preserve its legacy for future generations?

I’m an extremely passionate, young boogie woogie and blues pianist, and I want to spread the awesomeness of this ancient music style.
For me, boogie is more than just a genre; it's a passion, a calling, a way of life.
My mother - a renowned concert pianist and composer - was the incredible person to introduce me to the piano at a young age.
She started me off with a classical piano education from age 6, which I continued up until I discovered Boogie Woogie 10 years later.
Ever since then, it has like been love at first sight.
Unfortunately, she unexpectedly passed away from cancer, without ever actualizing her dream - to bring as many people as possible to her world of music.
So after discovering my love for boogie, I’ve made it my mission to introduce, teach, and help spread the word of this passionate style of music.
With Boogie Woogie Mastery, I will make this awesome music style as easy to learn and as fun as possible for everyone at any skill level who shares the same passion.
My aim is to get likemineded enthusiasts together in one place so that we can all learn the most efficient way possible. We will spread the boogie and let this style of music truly thrive once again.
